Google coughed up user data without a real warrant

It’s time to get away from Google.

Uuuuugh…I really don’t want to move everything off Google. I’ve got so many old accounts using a gmail or via Google’s “Sign In With Google”. Guess I really should get started now, because it’ll take a while.

I just started yesterday. Decided to go with Protonmail since it made it easier. I’m unsure what my authenticator app will be but I probably just need to be more serious able saving my backup codes.

Photo storage is probably going to be the biggest for me to move over.

I’m starting with the work account. TTI is moving from Google to Proton as we speak (account is up, just waiting for the domain transfer away from Squarespace). The personal account that’s almost 20 years old will be much more of a process. But honestly the constant march of Gemini across everything is one hell of a motivator.

In recent months, Google, Reddit, Discord and Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, have received hundreds of administrative subpoenas from the Department of Homeland Security, according to four government officials and tech employees privy to the requests. They spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

I just spent entirely too much time going through all my discord servers and downloading any content I wanted to potentially have in the future and leaving server.

A few years back I selected Bitwarden as a password manager, and have been thankful ever since. It now handles all the common authentication methods, and stores anything digital.

I use rsync.net to backup my linux system. They keep 7 daily and 2 weekly “snapshots” of everything I put there.

For more static files which don’t require linux ownerships and permissions (i.e. photos), iDrive is priced and working pretty well. Pcloud is enticing.

Rclone is a good tool to enable mounting many of the offsite drives, including Google. Selfhosted NextCloud merits consideration.

Android is another problem. There are a couple somewhat liberated alternatives, but I expect it might soon become difficult to obtain an unlocked phone which can be modded. I think there is at least one outfit in Europe which manufactures Libre phones. [fairphone.com]

+1 for rsync.net. They have the best pricing around as off-site backup.

We have a robust self-hosting culture around here. In fact, this Discourse is in my loft, made available to the internet by way of a Wireguard reverse proxy.

I use Vaultwarden as an alternative Bitwarden server. Works great.
