Just avoid Google

I’m so tired

Before Google we had AltaVista and DMOZ and others, …
It’s been more months than 24 and fewer years than 10 since I last used Google as a primary search tool; and I was early in the resistance to using the word ‘google’ as a verb.

I got a free 6mo. introductory to the Kagi, … and I’m keeping it as a default, in spite of my financial restrictions.

We all use search differently, for different target results, and for different purposes. My fondness for Wikipedia, or Dogpile (perhaps the first metasearcher), or any other, says more about me than about it/them as a search engine.

Other than DDG and Brave, I’ve appreciated Startpage, Mojeek, Qwant, udm14.com, and others.

For a mere $5/month, Kagi is right up there with Wikipedia and other favorite benefactions as a prime contender for money well invested.

Here’s some personal thoughts on search:

  • I put search terms in the search bar; I don’t ask a question, inviting dialog.
  • Search results were better when they operated as database queries, rather than trying to present smartness by answering converational questions.
  • I’m disappointed that browsers treat their address bar as a search bar, especially when I configure to use both.
  • Curiosity is a lifestyle; not a short term affliction requiring immediate displacement.

Google is not a dependancy.
Air in the tires is a dependency.

I’m never being happier than with Kagi. Highly recommended!
